ABSTRACT
The present experiment was carried out at the Professor Purnendu Gain Field Laboratory, Khulna University to check the reaction of three forage grass species under the various water logging conditions. The experiment was arranged as Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three species para grass (W1), German grass (W2) and Sorghum grass (W3), and three waterlogging the following treatments L0= control, L1= 1 week waterlogging, L2 = 2 week waterlogging. The morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics such as plant height, SPAD value, relative water content (RWC), leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, wilting index, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and proline content were recorded at 45, 52 and 59 days after planting (DAP). The results revealed that most of the studied parameters were affected by species, waterlogging treatment and interaction of species and waterlogging treatment. In the species, Para grass (W1) showed better performance, with higher light percentage area (SPAD) value, longer and wider leaf, higher number of leaves and relative water content, and higher plant height compared with German grass and Sorghum grass. German grass (W2) and Sorghum grass (W3) were moderately good and comparatively poor, respectively, under waterlogged condition. The waterlogging stress decreased growth related traits and increased biochemical responses to stress especially under L2. The higher the amount of proline produced, the better the osmotic adjustment and adaptation to excess soil moisture in Para grass. The interaction effects also showed that there were better performance of W1 combinations compared to W3 combinations in most of the growth and physiological characters under water logging stress. In overall conclusion, the research revealed that Para grass was the best adapted and promising species under water logging condition followed by German grass and Sorghum grass was less water logging tolerant. Hence, Para grass may be suggested for cultivation in water logging prone or low lying areas.| Details | |||
