Stylistic Evolution of Architecture in Bangladesh from a Colony to a Free Country

Abstract: Architecture of Bangladesh had been evolving gradually respecting the local forces. Since the

colonial impact was too sudden and alien from indigenous trend that at first it halted the evolution of the natural

trend. But, again than slowly and steadily it began to adapt the new styles / patterns / technologies. New trend

after colonial impact has been studied here to detect the evolutionary process in the style and the various forces

acting upon it. At first, universal and regional phases of evolution have been studied to find the context then the

local trend is examined to understand the process. A case study was also done to test the findings. It is believed

that once the factors effecting the stylistic evolution of architecture in Bangladesh is identified, it will smoothen

the current transitional phase to get set in its right track.
