Constraints to Green Roof adoption in shared multifamily apartments in Khulna City.

The adoption of green roofs (GRs) in urban areas is a crucial step towards achieving

sustainable cities. However, in cities like Khulna, Bangladesh, the widespread

implementation of GRs has been limited. This research aims to explore the constraints to

green roof adoption in shared multifamily apartments in Khulna city. The study

investigates the user perception of green roofs, assesses the functional usage of roofs

with and without green/garden spaces in selected multifamily apartments, and explores

the views of experts and professionals on the challenges of green roof design and

implementation. A questionnaire survey will be conducted among residents of 100

buildings, including both planned and non-planned neighborhoods, with and without

green roofs/roof gardens. The research findings will contribute to the understanding of

user perceptions, identify the challenges and constraints to green roof adoption, and

propose design and policy frameworks, as well as technical guidelines customized for

Khulna's multifamily apartments. The outcomes of this research will provide valuable

knowledge for sustainable urban development, urban policy-making, building codes, and

development control agencies. Moreover, this research will contribute to the global pursuit

of sustainable cities and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),

particularly SDG 11, SDG 2, and SDG 13, while addressing the adverse climate change

impacts faced by Khulna city.
