Eco-Sophic Design of a Coastal-Building Research and Learning Center for HBRI in Sharankhola, Bagerhat

Vernacular architecture has a long history in Bangladesh. In various parts of Bangladesh, local architectural styles and practices have evolved. Natural calamities frequently strike the country of Bangladesh. However, the issue is that while HBRI is located in Dhaka and conducts studies regarding building materials for different parts of Bangladesh, they struggle to engage people in the study. Buildings in the south-western coastal region are particularly vulnerable to cyclone damage, particularly those in the Sharankohla Upazilla of the Bagerhat district. This area is affected by cyclone surges, winds and ever-increasing salinity. An ecological approach is adapted in this thesis. This thesis demonstrates a building material research center that not only conducts building material research but also encourages individuals to get involved in the study of innovative materials. The built-forms of this thesis were created by contrasting local and contemporary building materials and techniques. The goal is to encourage locals to make better use of the resources they have access to locally. To further motivate learning, spaces serve as representations of regional architectural settings. This thesis includes research that used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. This thesis will aid in any future research into building material research centers that support knowledge-sharing and vernacular architectural practices.
