History of Sculpture Discipline, Khulna University

Since the dawn of human civilization, sculpture has been practiced as a means of sustaining life or as an aesthetic sense. Terracotta sculptures in particular are quite popular in the context of Bangladesh. The sculpture art was once created in various temples and Buddhist missionaries adopting religious and social stories as a medium of education. At some point, due to political changes and religious reason, its practice was stopped for several centuries. It is practiced only as a folk art. Although, the history of sculpture is quite ancient and rich, however, our modern and institutional practice of sculpture is not very old. Sculptor Novera Ahmed who introduced us about the modern sculpture in Bangladesh in 1956, after she completed her education from London. Later, in 1963 the department of sculpture was started in the East Pakistan College of Art and crafts. Since then, the B.F.A degree course in sculpture was started under the leadership of sculptor Abdur Razzaque .

Sculpture is a 3D plastic Art. This art can touch people's heartaches, happiness, tears, history of war more than any other medium of art and it has that ability to touch people's heart. The art of sculpture embodies the spirit and history of the great liberation war and independence of Bangladesh in 1971 under the open sky of across the country. It is an essential for the real existence of modern civilization.

Khulna Art College made its debut in the year 1983 as “Shashi Bhushan Art College” in and started the admission process at Maheswar Pasha, Doulatpur. Later, this art college was shifted to Gallamari and Boyra respectively. After that, from session 2009-2010, it got recognition as Khulna University Fine Arts Institutions and shifted from Boyra to main campus in 2013. At first, 47 students were admitted in honors courses in three disciplines of Khulna University Fine Arts School.

At first modern and up-to-date curriculum syllabus and then in 2014, Organogram was approved. In the past years, we been able to do academic activities as well as industrial and cultural activities with administrative support. Especially on the occasion of the Bengali tradition universal New Year festival “Noboborsho”, we have put up work with our earnest contribution in colorfully decorative rallies, in local motif different festoon, variety imitations of human and animals, poush-parbon, the cartoon of justice of Liberation and humanitarians, which are made by the students who has worked heart and soul relentlessly. And it has undoubtedly win the heart of mass people. Sculpture discipline plays a vital role on university days and also on important national day. Moreover, in the creative field such as National, Asian and various exhibitions as well as installation art, they have expressed their patriotism by participating in various workshops, art camps etc.

At present, the total number of students in B.F.A and M.F.A degrees in sculpture discipline in about 88. Students are creating creative and aesthetic works of art through drawing, metal, cement casting, welding, terracotta, wood and stone carving, installation art, mixed media including art display, study tour, annual art exhibition etc. under the curriculum in sculpture discipline.

Not to mention that, the sculpture of the liberation war in Bangladesh is under the open sky, so its popularity among the general public and the spirit of the great liberation war have already taken place in the mind despite hundreds of adversities. Now, the history of victory of Bengali nation is universal. We strongly believe that Bangladesh’s sculpture arts education including Khulna University will play an important role in building the spirit of liberation war and beautiful Bangladesh in the coming days.
