Dissertation Title: An Evaluation of the English Language Tests at Public Universities in Bangladesh

This research presents a critical evaluation of English language testing at public universities         in Bangladesh. A detailed analysis of test items and examination papers reveals significant shortcomings that necessitate fresh scrutiny and objective investigation. To assess the scope     and depth of these issues, the researcher gathered curricula and syllabi from various public            universities and conducted interviews and questionnaire surveys with teachers, academics, and students.

The findings indicate that most courses are predominantly literature-oriented, with insufficient focus on developing two essential communicative English skills—listening and     speaking. Traditional teaching methods primarily emphasize grammar, translation, and   comprehension, while practical assessments that effectively measure students’ language proficiency are notably absent.

Survey and interview responses reflect widespread dissatisfaction among both teachers and          students regarding the current inadequacies in teaching and testing. There is a pressing need      for immediate and sustainable reforms in this area. Based on comprehensive analysis and        investigation, the researcher proposes strategic recommendations for enhancing both theoretical and technology-assisted testing systems. If implemented, these reforms have the potential to significantly improve the quality of English language teaching and assessment in Bangladesh’s higher education institutions.
