Prevalence of heavy metals contaminated chicken consumption and possible health hazards: A survey

Heavy metals are environmental toxicants with high atomic mass or density compared to other metals. In the human body, they accumulate in vital organs and glands such as the brain, heart, kidneys, bone, and liver and can create disturbances in these organs even to the developing fetus. In humans, higher concentrations of them may cause anemia, damage to the pancreas, hemoglobin synthesis, hepatic and renal damage, bone fractures, conjunctivitis, nasal and mucous membrane ulcers, neurological disorder such as anencephaly, autism, etc. Chicken meat and spare parts are some of the most popular among various food items of Bangladesh and they are the source of a wide number of highly concentrated heavy metals (Pb, Cr, Cd). Our objective is to investigate the heavy metal consumption through chicken by Bangladeshi people and create social awareness about the possible detrimental effects.
