Enumeration of antibiotic resistance bacteria in giant tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) collected from selected shrimp farms of Khulna district.

Shrimp aquaculture in Bangladesh relies heavily on the input of artificially formulated feed and the application of agrochemicals, antibiotics and disinfectants. In traditional terrestrial livestock production in most countries, a range of antibiotics is registered for use to control bacterial diseases, though there has been a developing controversy surrounding the use of antibiotics as growth promoters for food animals. Antibiotic growth promoters are used to control zoonotic pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli and enterococci. However, indiscriminate and irrational use of antibiotics is the most influential factor of antibiotic resistance in and the global emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria is increasingly limiting the effectiveness of current drugs and significantly causing treatment failure. Despite the problem of antibiotic resistance in infectious bacteria, there is much scarcity of information on the diversity, distribution and origins of resistance genes in cultivated fish and shellfishes. So, in the present study, sequence-based approach will be used to identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
