DNA barcoding for assessing distribution patterns in seaweed species in the littoral and sub-littoral zones of Bangladesh

Seaweeds are a valuable resource for the coastal communities in Bangladesh. Seaweeds are rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins, making them a valuable source of nutrition. They can contribute to food security and improve the dietary intake of coastal populations. They can be harvested and processed into various products, including food, animal feed, fertilizers, and industrial products like agar, alginate, and carrageenan, which are used in food and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, the bioactive compounds found in seaweeds could lead to the development of new medicines and health products.  Though seaweeds possess significant agricultural, nutritional, and environmental value, there is currently very little information available about their species and distribution in our country. Thus, identifying seaweeds species and understanding their distribution in littoral and sub-littoral zones will supports environmental conservation, sustainable economic practices, and scientific advancement in Bangladesh. In order to understand the distribution of seaweed, their identification is necessary which is generally based on morphological characteristics, which have proven insufficient due to the high phenotypic plasticity and cryptic nature of many seaweed species. DNA barcoding, a molecular technique using short genetic markers typically from mitochondrial or chloroplast DNA regions, has revolutionized species identification and biodiversity assessment by providing a standardized and efficient method to distinguish between closely related species. This approach allows researchers to rapidly and accurately classify organisms based on their genetic profiles, overcoming challenges posed by morphological similarities and environmental variability. So the aims of the current study are to provide a comprehensive assessment of the seaweed species in Saint Martin's Island and the Sundarbans, analyze their genetic diversity and elucidate their phylogenetic relationships.
