Welcome to you on behalf of Economics Discipline of Khulna University, Khulna, Bangladesh. After its inception in 1999, the Discipline expanded rapidly as a center of excellence in economic science. It currently facilitates dynamic field of study and research, which helps the enrolled students to become tomorrow’s leaders. Our vibrant undergraduate and postgraduate programs provide a broad knowledge on theoretical and empirical aspects of economics. The academic environment and research facilities in this Discipline are excellent as most of the faculty members have higher education from various overseas institutions. Our outstanding faculty members teach and conduct research in the area of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Industrial Organization, Labor Economics, Monetary Economics, Agricultural Economics, Environmental and Development Economics. The students of this Discipline, therefore, enjoy a unique vibrant culture of learning and innovation. In meeting the increased demand for social scientists, both nationally and internationally, the Discipline has been playing a pioneering role since its inception. More than five-hundred graduates of this Discipline have joined to the workforce by year 2014 and acting as the ambassadors of the Discipline to project it positively both nationally and internationally. In its long journey, the Discipline has been working to establish close cooperation with various universities and research centers in home and abroad. We hope to continue the success trend of the Discipline and enhance its academic collaboration with renowned universities and research centers around the globe in the coming days. Fact & History of the Discipline
The Economics Discipline under Social Science School of Khulna University is one of the renowned knowledge centers in Bangladesh, with expertise across the full spectrum of mainstream economics. This Discipline started its academic activities in 1999 to supply well trained manpower in the field of economics. The faculty members of the Discipline are contributing to the cutting edge of economic developments, particularly focusing on the south-west region of Bangladesh through research and development since its inception. Its graduates are employed in a wide range of national and international organizations.
Starting its journey with the launching of Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Economics program of four-year duration, the Discipline expanded its coverage through offering eighteen-month duration regular Masters in Social Science (MSS) in Economics program and sixteen-month duration evening Master of Development Studies (MDS) program. Curricula of all the programs in the Discipline have been framed as a blend of economics and relevant fields incorporating theoretical and applied courses. Consequently, students of this Discipline get ample scope for research work not only to enrich them with real life knowledge but also to significantly contribute to the understanding of the economics of the south-western part of Bangladesh characterized by typical topography and climate change vulnerability.
The Discipline has recently successfully conducted the ‘Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP)’ under the auspices of University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh and the World Bank. The project has facilitated to build up an enriched seminar library with a large collection of books, journals, research papers, theses, etc., and to develop a sophisticated computer laboratory supported by Wi-Fi connection in addition to many other facilities in the Discipline. The Discipline has been honored by being selected in year 2015 as one of the seven Disciplines of Khulna University for administering self assessment activities of its ongoing programs under the supervision of Institutional Quality Assessment Cell (IQAC), Khulna University and Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) of UGC.
Twelve batches under BSS (Hons) in Economics program, four batches under Masters in Social Science (MSS) in Economics program and four batches under Master of Development Studies (MDS) program have already (by year 2014) graduated from the Discipline. Currently (as on January 2015), around one hundred and sixty students are studying at undergraduate level and more than one hundred students are studying at masters level in the Discipline. With its qualified and well-trained faculties, the Discipline is successfully carrying on the task of producing educated, skillful and trained graduates to meet the challenges of ever changing time.
