Elizabeth Ehrnschwender, 99th Medical Support Squadron NCO in charge of microbiology, holds a Petri dish that contains Escherichia coli bacteria April 10, 2013, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. E. Coli bacteria is inexpensively and easily grown and studied in a laboratory setting. Most E. coli strains are harmless.
