The greater Khulna region, the south-west part of Bangladesh has been characterized by a unique blend of different terrestrial and aquatic environments owing to its proximity to the Sundrabans, the world’s largest single-tract mangrove forest, the different salinity regime with dynamic aquifer and the fertile soil with alluvial soil deposition in Ganges delta. However, the recent agricultural and fisheries commodity based industrialization and rapid urbanization process have changed the pristine quality of this unique environment while their salient roles in the ecosystem’s functioning cannot be replaced. The responsible management of the resources and ecosystems upon which sustainable development of the country depends is a major challenge that needs to be addressed with empirically derived knowledge. Understanding such reality different academic Disciplines under Life Science School of Khulna University provides education in different fields of agricultural, biotechnological and pharmaceutical sciences through problem-based learning with a focus on the country’s natural resource management on a sustainable basis and as such fosters interdisciplinary learning and research approaches.

At present, the Life Science School comprises seven disciplines including Agrotechnology, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Environmental Science, Fisheries and Marine Resources Technology, Forestry and Wood Technology, Pharmacy and Soil Science Disciplines. Students completing 12 years of schooling are eligible to enroll into undergraduate programs of four years program through a country-wide competitive entrance examination. The Life Science School currently has over twelve hundred undergraduate students with almost similar number of male and female students. In addition, the School has over one thousand masters and 35 PhD students studying at various Disciplines.  The School houses quite a good number of laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipments, WiFi hotspots, laboratory-cum-classrooms, E-learning center, seminar library and conference rooms. The research studies carried out by the faculties cover both basic and applied research related to life and environment. Conservation of bio-resources and their sustainable use is studied from the viewpoints of both natural and social sciences. Coexistence of human beings, other life and the global environment are an important target of various Disciplines of Life Science School and the faculty members have been intently dealing with these problems. Recently, the academic disciplines of the School started providing structured doctoral research training in a highly interdisciplinary research environment. It is this interdisciplinary spirit that propelled Khulna University to stand apart from other public universities of Bangladesh in terms of fostering critical thinking and innovation and creating the access to global knowledge pools so as to adapt that knowledge to local context.
