Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii, family Asteraceae) is one of the most popular cut flowers in the world. It was first introduced in Bangladesh in 2007 at Jhikorgacha of Jessore district. Gradually its cultivation has been expanded to several acres of land because of high profitability. The production cost of gerbera is high in Bangladesh due to high price of imported seedlings. In Bangladesh more than 90% of the seedlings are imported from India. The multiplication rate by division of suckers or clumps is very low. There is a need to develop technology for rapid multiplication. This could be accomplished through micropropagation technique. The research project proposes to solve the problem of scarcity of gerbera plant propagules for mass cultivation.
