History

Khulna University (Bengali: খুলনা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is the 9th public university in Bangladesh, established in 1987. It is situated at Gollamari, Khulna, Bangladesh, by the river Moyur, beside the Khulna-Satkhira highway. The academic programs of Khulna University started on 31 August 1991 with only 80 students in four disciplines. Khulna University has 28 disciplines under six schools and one institute. The most promising characteristic of this university is that it is free from student politics. No session jam in academic activities. A big number of professors, associate professors and assistant professors are working as faculty member of various disciplines. Many national and international research projects are on going. Student accommodation facility is very well. There are two halls for male students and one hall for female students. Library and laboratory facility is also of high quality. Students and stuffs are provided with transport facility. Overall student quality of this university is very satisfying. Graduates of this university are working all over the world with a lot of fame.

1. Overview of Khulna University

Khulna University was established under the Khulna University Act of 1990 which was enacted by the parliament of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh with the vision and missions to kindle higher education and research in different fields of knowledge. The vision and mission of Khulna University are guided by four core values

Khulna University strives to create a knowledge-based just society through accelerating inclusive and transformative growth of Khulna, Bangladesh and the world. The university aims to achieve this vision through cross-cutting research, scholarly enquiry and development of new knowledge.

Khulna University started its academic programme in 1991. Semester system was adopted from its inception. The University has six schools, two centres and a research cell. The University has a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), which is one of the six existing CETLs established by UGC in public universities of Bangladesh. The University has also set up its Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) that works for assuring quality education, research and governance. There are 26 disciplines under six schools that act as degree offering entities in the University. Physical facilities, such as classrooms, libraries, laboratories and field laboratories are provided adequately. The University has medical facilities for primary medical treatment. The University also offers student accommodation in five residential halls, three for male and two for female students. Transportation facility is also provided for students and staff.

Khulna University is the first public university to have acted as a powerful performer in the economic and cultural life of the south-western region of Bangladesh. The academic programmes and services are driven by the needs of the community and economy in a global context so that the graduates can successfully meet the challenges of the changing world. There are a good number of national and international research projects being carried out in the University. Khulna University has established itself as a centre of excellence in the arena of higher education in Bangladesh. The University has a plan to increase the number of disciplines to 32 for accommodating a total of 11,095 students by the academic year of 2018-2019. This year (2016) Institute of Education & Research (IER) will start its academic activity.

 

2. Quality Assurance and Regulation (Internal and External)

Ministry of Education is the cardinal body of all education sectors in Bangladesh to deal with the policy and strategy for the development of education. University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) acts as the intermediary between the government and the universities for regulating the affairs of all the universities under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education. In order to develop a mechanism for the systematic review of study programmes, ensure quality teaching-learning, research, knowledge generation and support services standards at an acceptable level, the Ministry of Education and the UGC established Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in every public and private university. As a first step in this endeavour, the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP), a World Bank funded project, works to support the establishment of IQACs in the universities. Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) in the UGC provides guidance and technical assistance to the IQACs in order to make them functional. IQAC in the Khulna University was established in 2015 with an aim to improve quality of teaching, learning and research. It covers almost every aspect of operation of the quality assurance process within the university. Initially, IQAC is a 3 year-project funded by HEQEP and Khulna University. After these 3 years IQAC will become a permanent body to ensure quality at programme level and also monitor the quality of governance at the university as a whole.

Apart from this national level quality control mechanism, Khulna University is exercising different quality assurance mechanisms since its inception. The key performance indicators of quality assurance are:

  • Academic calendar for each semester is maintained properly.
  • Course teachers take their classes regularly according to the credit hour assigned for each course.
  • Every programme has updated course outline and the course teacher usually manages and develops course aim and objectives, learning outcomes, lesson plans, assessment procedures, inductive readings/references and schedule for class tests. The course plan/outline is distributed among the students at the first week of the semester/term.
  • Class tests, assignments and sessional assessments are evaluated in time and results are circulated among the students before the term final examinations.
  • Term final examination results are published within a month.
  • Each course teacher has to maintain academic documentation (such as class attendance, continuous assessment answer scripts, marks, final exam questions, answer scripts, final exam results and students’ progress report) properly.
  • The faculty/teachers publish journal articles and participate in conferences regularly.
  • The faculty/teachers usually hunt research grants to carry out research projects.

The quality of academic activities of Khulna University is maintained internally and externally. Internal arrangement for ensuring quality education is rigorous. In the discipline level, head of the discipline acts as the coordinator to distribute the courses to each faculty member based on his/her preferences and expertise in the relevant field. In addition, (s)he also selects class teachers for respective year among existing faculty members. The co-ordinator for each batch is responsible to monitor course registration of the students at the beginning of each term. The faculty play the mentoring role for the students. In addition, they are also responsible to notify the students about all academic activities. During an academic term a course teacher works as the course administrator. The course teacher is usually responsible to evaluate students’ answer scripts, presentations, term papers and sessional assignments.

During the term the Head of the discipline receives progress report of the theoretical and sessional courses from the course teachers. The Examination Controller’s Office of Khulna University is responsible to organise final exam of the term. They send exam dates to the Discipline and the class teachers finalise the exam schedule by involving students. The students can prefer their own schedule. Office of the Controller of Examinations is responsible to invite faculty members or question setters to set questions for the term final examination. The question-setters submit the questions to the Head of the discipline in sealed envelopes. The Head of discipline develops a panel of moderators by involving internal and external members in order to modify and finalize the question papers of the courses. The results are published by the Office of the Controller of Examinations and are approved by the Academic Council and Syndicate, and degrees are awarded accordingly. The quality structure can be summarized as a hierarchical process where any decision regarding the degree offering process  has to be forwarded and approved by the Head of the discipline, the Executive Committee of the Respective School (for postgraduate studies Board of Advanced Studies), the Academic Council and the syndicate respectively. To ensure the quality education CETL and IQAC of Khulna University provide training for the faculty members. The self-assessment exercise is now going on under the guidance of Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) of University Grants Commission, Bangladesh and IQAC of Khulna University.

 

2.1 Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)

CETL is a service oriented and research led centre that supports the university to achieve its strategic teaching and learning aims. CETL achieves this objective through offering 1) required programmes for the development of new academic staff at KU; 2) professional learning including workshops and seminars; 3) consultation services for faculty; and 4) special events such as hosting of leading researchers and practitioners in the field of higher education. CETL works in the areas of approaches to teaching and learning, curriculum design, assessment, eLearning and evaluation.

CETL is committed to delivering high quality professional learning programmes, to engaging in scholarship and conducting research in support of university-wide teaching and learning developments. The mission of CETL is to work across Khulna University to enhance the quality of the student learning experience and the quality of the teacher’s experience.

CETL aims to supporting a student-centered teaching agenda and towards the enhancement of teaching and learning at Khulna University and other regional higher educational institutions. CETL supports teachers in their practice, with the aim of enhancing the quality of the student learning experience and this support is provided within a holistic framework of professional learning to meet the needs of a diverse range of academics at different stages in their careers. Specific objectives of CETL, KU are:

  • To organize need oriented training for the teachers, students and support staff of KU and other regional universities.
  • To conduct research on teaching and learning in higher education.
  • To publish journals, E-resource and develop curriculum and modules for different faculty development programmes.
  • To offer certificate/diploma courses.
  • To develop pool of competent trainers.
  • To arrange need based workshops and seminars to support diverse range of academics at different stages in their career.
  • To offer consultation services.
  • To co-ordinate and lead activities of KU and other universities and develop exchange and collaboration among different relevant institutions home and abroad.
  • To perform such other necessary activities to facilitate attainment of the objectives of the centre with the approval of proper authority.

Faculty Development Activities at a glance:

Induction for Lecturers:

Since formal establishment, CETL, KU has successfully completed the very first one-day event “Induction for the Lecturers” with 32 lecturers.

Training on Pedagogy:

CETL has successfully conducted training programme on “Teaching Pedagogy, Module I: Teaching & Learning” in association with Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Khulna University. The programme was intended for the lecturers of Khulna University to be introduced with state-of-the-art pedagogy in teaching and learning. A carefully designed series of technical sessions was conducted by a number of distinguished resource persons from Khulna University and other universities of Bangladesh. Training on pedagogy is mandatory for all lecturers of KU and open for young faculties from other regional universities.

Process of Continuous Faculty Development for KU and other Regional Universities:

CETL arranges Dialogue on Faculty Development with the young faculty to monitor individual faculty development and share their experiences to maintain team-spirit in gradual development on a regular basis. It also arranges Faculty Development Exhibition to showcase evidence of faculty development to the key strategic and administrative personnel i.e. Head, Dean and Vice-chancellor of KU. In order to monitor faculty development and maintain quality of teaching, learning and assessment, CETL has been applying five Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the participating faculties in terms of five pedagogic components: reflections on acquired knowledge, preparation of lesson plan, preparation of course syllabus, peer-observation report, and student’s evaluation report.

CETL has started to work as a regional hub of excellence through offering its services to the neighboring regional universities through including participants from those universities in its training and development programmes.

 

3. Funding

Khulna University receives budget for all the development and non-development activities basically from the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh through University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh as allocation/grants. Total of the development budget and 95% of the non-development budget is deposited to the University’s fund through UGC. Five percent of the University’s non-development cost comes from its own income like fees of the students and from other sources.

Khulna University receives funding for research projects and infrastructure development from a variety of funding sources and sponsoring organizations. Some of the examples include the Sundarbans Ecological Monitoring Project funded by Department for International Development, UK (DFID); the Sundarbans Biodiversity Conservation funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB); Support for University Fisheries Education and Research Project funded by DFID, Climate Change Strategic Project funded by DELPHE programme of British Council; Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project funded by World Bank; Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Conservation in Coastal Protection Forests funded by GIZ, Germany (Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit), INSPIRE Project funded by British Council; International Research Development Centre, Canada; Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) funded by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) supported projects.  Moreover, using the interdisciplinary expertise of the faculty members across different Schools and existing lab facilities in different Disciplines, faculty members has been successful in securing research grant from:

4. Infrastructure

Khulna University has a total area of 105.75 acres where there are academic buildings, administrative buildings, student’s residential halls, library, medical centre, playground, residential area for staff, and mosque, etc.  Khulna University has sufficient infrastructural facilities for producing quality graduates. There are 04 academic buildings including the Annex building. The laboratories (81) are attached with the academic buildings. The library of the university has two separate buildings. Besides the medical centre the university has a fitness centre as well. There are five residential halls of which three are for the male students and two are for female students. For the teachers, officers and employees Khulna University has separate residential areas. In addition, the university offers vehicle shed, mosque and other infrastructures. The playground of Khulna University covers an area of 18580 sq. m. A number of infrastructure development activities is under process.

5. Research Engagement

Research at Khulna University is inspired by challenges and opportunities, is shared by stakeholders and communities, and is underpinned by excellence. The University undertakes specialised and cross-disciplinary research. Our goal is to bring change through practical and applied knowledge that can be used in science, arts, commerce, and that will impact the progress of the community. Research exercise in Khulna University is versatile in its nature and extent. Having different background of the faculty members within the school and their heterogeneous specialization and research interest, a wide range of researches are in practice. Research supervision is provided for the production of individual dissertation/ thesis by the students at graduate, postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral levels. Apart from these, Khulna University encourages faculty members to conduct research of different length supported by Khulna University Research Cell and University Grants Commission, Bangladesh. 5.2 Research Centres

Khulna University supports two research centres: 1) Khulna University Research Cell (KURC) and 2) Centre for Integrated Studies on the Sundarbans (CISS). These centres utilize an interdisciplinary approach to work with valued partners as they deliver responses, clever and enterprising.

 

5.2.1 Khulna University Research Cell (KURC)

Right from its inception Khulna University gives due emphasis on research and most of the faculties are engaged in various kinds of research taking support from different sources (e.g., UGC, ministries, Khulna University, etc.). In order to coordinate and administer research activities Khulna University Research (KURC) was established in the year 2000. Now KURC is a fully organized research body at KU.

 

Objectives of KURC

  • To promote research work of the highest order in all branches of knowledge with particular focus on the needs of the country.
  • To coordinate and administer research activities undertaken by faculties and students of the university through making arrangement for monitoring and evaluation.
  • To augment dissemination of scholastic knowledge by organizing conferences, seminars, symposia, etc.

With the support from UGC, KURC provides small grants for research projects undertaken by faculties of the university following appropriate procedure and make provision of monitoring and evaluation of such projects. From time to time it organizes training programmes for upgrading teaching and research capabilities of young faculties. It also organizes seminars, workshops, etc. addressing regionally/nationally important issues. Development of a central laboratory under KURC is in progress. Presently this laboratory contains some very specialized equipment (e.g. HPLC). KURC works to keep these equipment working and open for all interested faculties.

 

5.2.2 Centre for Integrated Studies on the Sundarbans (CISS)

Khulna University is the educational and research institution closest to the Sundarbans, the single largest mangrove forest in the world. The mangrove is very rich in its resources and biodiversity. The Sundarbans is also declared a world heritage and Ramsar site. Conservation and improvement of its biodiversity is crucial and demanding. Considering the necessity of research on the Sundarbans, Centre for Integrated Studies on the Sundarbans (CISS) was established at Khulna University in 2003. CISS has been conducting intensive research on the Sundarbans since its inception. It also organizes seminars, symposium, etc. to address coastal resource conservation issues in Bangladesh.

 

Objectives of CISS

  • To conduct research for sustainable management and promotion of resources of the Sundarbans in particular and that of the coastal zone for the interest of the nation.
  • To apply science and technology for the socio-economic development of the country and to undertake research projects in cooperation with different Disciplines of Khulna University and/or any other public, private and international organizations.
  • To organize seminar, symposium, workshop, conference etc. on any issue of importance regarding the Sundarbans and coastal zone of Bangladesh.
  • To provide suggestions to the government for policy formulation and development of sustainable management strategy for the Sundarbans and coastal zone.

 

Activities of CISS

  • Conducting intensive research for conservation and improvement of the biodiversity of the Sundarbans.
  • Organizing seminars and workshops on different aspects relevant to the conservation of various resources of the Sundarbans.

7. Student Number and Profile

Currently, more than five thousand six hundred students are studying at Khulna University. With its qualified and well-trained faculties, the University has been successfully carrying on the task of producing educated, skilled and trained graduates to meet the challenges of the changing time. School-wise distribution of students indicates that about 29 percent students are enrolled in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) School, 28 percent in Life Science (LS) School, 9 percent in Business Administration (BA) School, 11 percent in Arts and Humanities (AH) School, 14 percent in Social Science (SS) School, 4 percent in Fine Arts School (FA) and the rest 5 percent are in other certificate and diploma programmes (Table 5).

A total of 26 disciplines are currently functioning under six schools at Khulna University. Discipline-wise distribution indicates that the Business Administration (BA) Discipline holds the rank one position having 490 students under its undergraduate and graduate programmes (Table 6). Note that, in addition to usual day-time undergraduate and graduate programmes, the discipline offers evening and off-time professional graduate programmes to meet the pressing need of the people. For the very reason, the largest number of students is enrolled in the discipline. In contrast, the Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) and Human Resource Management (HRM) Disciplines stay at the bottom of the list having only 40 students each, since these two Disciplines are newly launched in 2015-2016 (Table 6). The average number of enrolled students per discipline is a bit higher than 200.

Level-wise distribution indicates that about 80 percent students are enrolled in undergraduate programme, 14 percent in graduate programme, 1 percent in PhD programme and the rest 5 percent in other certificate and diploma programmes (Table 7). Only 12 out of enrolled 5616 students at Khulna University are from abroad (Nepal), who are studying at various disciplines of the University (Table 8). Gender-wise distribution indicates that around 59 percent students of the University are male against 41 percent female (Table 9). The enrolled students come from various educational backgrounds like science, business studies and arts & humanities. They are also from different regions of the country along with different family background. As a result, the University has a good combination of residential and non-residential students. However, they have a strong bondage among themselves which is praiseworthy.

The students of the University participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities regularly. Departments like Physical Education, Office of the Director of Student Affairs are directly involved in to facilitate co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Office of the Director of Student Affairs looks after all the student activities outside the classroom. There are 23 student organizations in Khulna University (Table 10). These organizations have been developed with specific responsibilities to organize sports, entertainment programmes and cultural activities on a regular basis involving students.

 

Overview of Co-curricular Activities

In Khulna University the office of the Director Students’ Affairs (DSA) serves the combined role of proctor body, students’ advisory body, and an agent to deal with students’ external affairs. With an aim to prepare KU graduates as responsible citizens, and above all value-laden human being, prime responsibility lies in establishing and maintaining sound campus atmosphere in terms of interaction, exchange, and sharing of knowledge, societal values, and cultural differences among students, teachers and communities through various forms of formal and non-formal co-curricular activities. Philosophically, all co-curricular activities facilitated by DSA body are designed with a vision to make KU students confident and aware about the deep-rooted diversified tangible and in-tangible cultural legacy of Bangladesh. Its co-curricular activities are thus focused more on different national events – which are the sources of all inspirations that shape patriotism, leadership and community coherence among the young minds.  Mission of DSA body is to work as an agent to expose students to prime external stakeholders – i.e. the community, government and non-government, national and international organizations so as to bridge the gap in students’ academic and professional life through arranging various skill development, career counseling and community outreach programmes.

More than twenty student organizations are officially registered into the campus and operating their regular activities according to their nature of concentration. Moreover, students are engaged in numerous informal gatherings to make the campus more colourful and vibrant. The student organizations have a variety of activities with special focus on music (classical, modern, folk, rock, etc.), dance, recitation, drama, movie, photography, blood donation, voluntary schooling for under privileged children, debating, etc. The students are also engaged in cadet core, readers’ forum, Leo and Rotaract club, musical band, science club, business club, math club, etc.

As a part of active cultural activities and events the students of Khulna University involve themselves in both arranging and performing numerous colourful events, stage shows, exhibitions, rally, contests, and so forth. Every national and international day (e.g. international mother language day, children’s’ day, the independence day, the national mourning day, the Khulna University Day, Martyred Intellectuals Day, victory day, etc.) celebration is directly arranged and performed by the students with the assistance of the DSA office. Probably one of the most remarkable events is our Bengali New Year celebration, which is solely arranged by the third year students with the guidelines of DSA office. Khulna University students celebrate Bangla New Year as the largest host in Khulna city and its periphery. The biggest rally with largest variety of colour and life is arranged by the students of fine arts along with all other disciplines of Khulna University. The biggest New Year fair of Khulna city is arranged in KU campus where mostly students are the organizer while people of Khulna city are the participants. The first year students organize reception programme, second year students organize rain and winter festivals, and fourth year students are the organizers of rag day programmes. In parallel, students from different disciplines specifically celebrate focused days like – Environment day, Soil day, Ocean day and so on. Almost every student organization celebrates and offers events of their own identity and own field of activities. While arranging and performing these events the students get to learn both onstage and offstage activities required into an event management.

The DSA office arranges, guides, and encourages students to take part in different national and international events including cultural exchange, cultural contests including inter university, national and international competitions, media competition. Khulna university students are very frequent to join and show excellence in South Asian University Youth Festival. Plenty of on campus programmes like – on campus recruitment, job fair, exchange programme, career counseling, higher education consultancy, seminars, workshops, training sessions, experience sharing, consultancy for studies abroad, etc. are common events arranged by the DSA office year-round. More frequently, in particular, the higher studies in the USA, Germany, and Australia are remarkably significant workshops took place in Khulna University in recent times.

In terms of student welfare the office of the DSA also tries to uplift the morale of the financially challenged and critically sick students within its limited financial capacity. As Khulna University is a subsidized public institution run by public money, it has provision to offer financial support to relatively disadvantaged students. Besides, the DSA office maintains a database of such students and tries to help them become self-sufficient. DSA office also helps students to seek scholarships, sponsorships, part time teaching and private tuition for the financially challenged students according to their specialization.  Besides, the office tries to contribute financial support for unexpected medical emergencies and critical sicknesses of the students from the funds of student welfare. Thus, the DSA office creates an enabling environment for a student to grow as a complete personality and as a leader to serve the society and the nation.

Almost all the Disciplines of the University have their own cricket teams, football teams, basketball teams and so on. These teams take part in yearly intra and inter-disciplinary tournaments of the University. In addition, the university team of football, cricket, handball, basketball, etc. take part in inter-university tournaments and function as ambassador of the University in those events. The students also take part in indoor games. They spontaneously participate in various community activities like winter cloth collection and distribution, helping poor and destitute people, standing beside disaster affected people, participating in various important days such as world environment day, international mother language day, world soil day, world food day, world ocean day and so on. They also actively take part in arranging workshop, training, orientation, picnic, fresher’s reception and such other events at discipline and university level.

The drop-out rate of the university is very low, only 1.76 percent for year 2015. Such a low rate signals the acceptability of the educational programmes currently ongoing at this university. An excellent performance of the already graduated students of the University at private and public national institutions including international organizations helps to keep the drop-out rate of the University at a minimum level.

 

8. Staff/Student Ratio

Both academic and non-academic staffs are working at the University for the betterment of the students. A total of 396 faculty members and 601 non-academic staffs are currently working in the University (Table 11). Among the non-academic staffs, 41 percent are officers and 59 percent are staffs. The teacher-student ratio of the University is 1:14, which implies that each faculty member serves to 14 students on an average (Table 12). The students of Life Science (LS) and Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) School are in advantageous position where each teacher serves for ten to twelve students on an average (Table 13). However, the scenario is the worse in case of Arts and Humanities (AH) and Social Science (SS) School where each teacher serves for 23 to 24 students on an average. The non-academic staff-student ratio of the University is 1:9, i.e. each non-academic staff is serving to nine students on an average.

9. Staff Qualification

The qualification of staff plays a very vital role in ensuring quality education. Khulna University has four categories of academic staffs: Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. Generally, Lecturer is the entry level academic position at the University, though there are limited scopes for entry in higher level positions. The main entry qualification at Lecturer level includes having first class/division/equivalent results in secondary school to postgraduate levels. No third division/class is allowed for this position. A sequential addition with the entry qualifications of Lecturer is required for entering into higher level academic positions. Table 14 illustrates the entry qualification of academic staff at Khulna University.  Similarly, Table 15 summarizes the entry qualification of non-academic staff at Khulna University.

Khulna University comprises 396 full time faculty members across 26 disciplines of the University. More than one-third faculty members hold PhD degree from different reputed universities in the world including University of Cambridge, UK; University of Leeds, UK; University of Swansea, UK; University College London, UK, Heriot-watt University, UK. University of Manchester, UK, University of New South Wales, Australia; University of Griffith, Australia; Curtin University, Australia; Yamaguchi University, Japan; Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan; Osaka University, Japan; Tohoku University, Japan and so on (Table 16). Another 11 percent have MPhil degrees from reputed universities of home and abroad. The remaining faculty members are either having Master’s/Bachelor degree from different universities of similar repute or continuing their studies and research towards PhD (Table 16). Designation-wise distribution of the academic staff of the University indicates that about 30 percent faculty members of the University are Professors, holding the top rank in the education field. Only 16 percent are in the entry level (Lecturer), while the rest are either Assistant or Associate Professor (Table 17). More than 80 percent faculty members of the University are currently in service, while about 17 percent are on leave for higher study or research (Table 18). 10.2 Master’s Programme

Khulna University runs Bachelor/Bachelor (Hons.) programme in its 18 Disciplines under five schools. The Masters programmes are usually of 18 months. All of the students have to complete a research work under this postgraduate programme. The Master students’ research process involves setting research objectives, carrying out a literature review, developing and implementing a research design, incorporating appropriate methodologies, analysing findings, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations. The students’ research may take the form of dissertation or a policy implementation project.

 

10.3 MPhil Programme

Programme duration: 3 years

Course work Requirements:

A student shall undertake a course work of 200 marks divided into 2 courses of 100 marks each or 4 courses of 50 marks.

Dissertation Requirements:

An MPhil Dissertation/Thesis is primary requirement of the MPhil Programme. The thesis submitted for the degree of MPhil must be written in Bangla or in English. The thesis shall be either a recorded original work or an ordered critical exposition of existing Knowledge.

Examination Requirements:

Successful completion of the given course work. An acceptance and pass mark for the written dissertation along with an oral examination. Every candidate shall have to give a seminar before the board of examination committee.

Other requirements:

In service candidates must take a one year leave from his/her job and shall work in the respective discipline no later than beginning of the 2nd year of his/her study period.

 

10.4 PhD Programme

Full-time PhD students shall be required to register for at least six terms and not more than fourteen terms. The period of registration for part-time PhD student shall not be less than eight terms and more than fourteen terms under any circumstances. The dissertation of PhD must be a piece of fundamental research work characterized either by the discovery of new facts, or by a fresh interpretation of facts or theories. In either case, it should demonstrate the candidate’s scholarly capacity of developing his/her own philosophical stands through critical understanding/examination/investigation and judgment. It must be satisfactory as far as its language and presentation are concerned. In addition to a PhD dissertation and a journal article thereof, every PhD candidate shall earn a total of at least 13 credits during his/her study period to be considered eligible for the degree. Credits can be earned from course works, seminars and conference presentations as described in the following sections.

Each student shall complete at least nine credit-hours but not less than three courses.

(a) The student shall complete suggested course works pursuant to the Undergraduate and/or Master Ordinance of the concerned Discipline of Khulna University within the two academic years of his/her admission.

(b) Student can earn maximum two credits from two public seminars. Each seminar presentation shall be treated as one credit earned by the student subject to further provisions stipulated in the following Sub-sections. The interval between two public seminars shall not be less than six months.

(c) Student can earn maximum four credits from conference presentation. Each conference presentation shall be treated as two credits for his/her earnings provided the student is the first author. A proof of conference presentation attested by the Supervisor shall be sent to the Controller of Examinations within two weeks for record keeping and the same shall be mentioned in the next six-monthly progress report.

(d) Student shall publish at least one article in peer-reviewed journals indexed in Web of Science (Arts & Humanities Citation index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Science Citation Index); IEEE, Scopus, Current Contents and Index Chemicus provided the article is an output of his/her own PhD work and he/she is the first author of the article.

11. Entry Requirement

Khulna University runs Bachelor/Bachelor (Hons.) programme in its 26 Disciplines under six schools. A student having HSC/ Equivalent is eligible to apply for admission in Khulna University Bachelor/Bachelor (Hons.) programme. Applicant Students are subject to a written admission test as there is a fixed class size. Additionally, there are two privilege quotas; a) freedom fighter dependent and b) indigenous people in each discipline. The CGPA requirements in SSC/Equivalent and HSC/Equivalent may vary from discipline to discipline. The following table shows the current discipline wise requirement and class size.

11.2 Master’s Programme

Each discipline of the university runs their Master’s programme according to the discipline’s requirements and priority of research area. The general requirements for admission to the Master’s programme of Khulna University are as follows.

 

Degree Requirements:

Bachelor/Bachelor (Hons.) degree from the discipline in which the candidate wishes to enrol or an allied Discipline/Department from Khulna University or any other public university of Bangladesh or any national/foreign degree recognized as equivalent by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh provided the candidate has completed at least 16 years of schooling at the time of application.  However,

(a) Applicants from private university shall provide proof that the institute which issued the certificate (Bachelor and/or Master’s) has approval from the UGC of Bangladesh.

(b) Applicants from private university shall also provide proof that the degree programme has been offered at an UGC approved campus.

 

Grade points/ CGPA requirements

Grade points in HSC or their equivalents are decided by the respected discipline. Result in Bachelor or equivalents are also decided by the respective disciplines.

No third division/class or equivalent result at any level.

 

Other requirements

An in service candidate, if selected for admission, have to submit proof of having obtained permission for study from the concerned authority.

Additionally, several disciplines also run need based and job market demand oriented special Masters Programme for professionals such as EMBA, MDPS, MPGS, MAL, etc. The entry requirements are fixed by the respected discipline.

 

 11.3 MPhil Programme

For admission into the MPhil Programme a candidate must have the following qualifications and fulfil the following requirements:

 

Grade points/ CGPA requirements:

Candidates must have passed SSC and HSC Examinations at list in the second division/equivalent GPA.

Candidates must have obtained at least 45% marks or GPA equivalent to second class in BA (Hons.) and at least 50% marks or GPA equivalent to second class in Master’s examination. A candidate not fulfilling any one of the qualifications laid down in sub clause (b) may be admitted on special considerations into MPhil programme (not transferable to PhD programme) if he/she has at least (i) five years reaching experience at degree level or (ii) seven years research experience in Research Institute with a minimum of 3 (three) publications in recognized journals.

Candidates with MBBS/MAg /BSc (Eng) degrees are eligible for admission into MPhil programme if they have obtained 50% marks or GPA equivalent to Second class.

 

11.4 PhD Programme

A candidate for admission to the PhD programme must fulfil the following admission requirements:

 

Degree requirements

Master’s degree from the Discipline in which the candidate wishes to enrol or an allied Discipline/Department from Khulna University or any other public university of Bangladesh or any national/foreign degree recognized as equivalent by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh provided the candidate has completed at least 17 years of schooling at the time of application.  However,

(a) Applicants from private university shall provide proof that the institute which issued the certificate (Bachelor and/or Master’s) has approval from the UGC of Bangladesh.

(b) Applicants from private university shall also provide proof that the degree programme has been offered at an UGC approved campus.

 

Grade points/ CGPA requirements

  • One first division or equivalent result (CGPA 3 in a scale of 4 and CGPA 3.5 in a scale of 5) in SSC or HSC or their equivalents and one first class or equivalent result in Bachelor or Masters (CGPA 3 in a scale of 4 and CGPA 3.5 in a scale of 5).
  • No third division/class or equivalent result at any level.

 

Publication requirements

In case of Master’s degree without thesis, at least one peer-reviewed publication as the first author in a journal/conference proceeding/book chapter is required.

12. Graduate Outcomes

Khulna University offers both undergraduate and postgraduate level of education in various interdisciplinary subject areas. The curriculum of different discipline of Khulna University involves multi-disciplinary framework which is expected to create employability in wide-ranging fields. It is found that students’ knowledge and skill to attain the above learning outcome is quite satisfactory as graduates of Khulna University are employed in wide-ranging fields both in Bangladesh and foreign countries. Every year the University produces 800 graduates from 16 disciplines under the five schools of the University. The schools include Arts and Humanities (AH), Life Science (LS), School for Management and Business Administration (SOMBA), Science, Engineering and Technology (SET), and Social Science (SS). Graduate outcomes of Khulna University on the basis of survey reports (2014-2015) are shown in the following table. Discipline wise detail graduate outcomes are included in the annexure.

Arts and Humanities (AH) School

Arts and Humanities school consists of two disciplines namely English and Bangle Language and Literature. The school offers both undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes. Among these two disciplines, Bangle Language and Literature has produced the first batch of graduates. English discipline has produced 13 batches so far. Majority of the graduates from this school are working for academic positions in public and private universities and colleges. In addition, the graduates are also working for bank, NGOs etc.

 

Life Science (LS) School

Life science school offers both undergraduate and postgraduate level of education in various interdisciplinary subject areas. The disciplines are Agrotechnology (AT), Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE), Environmental Science (ES), Fisheries and Marine Resource Technology (FMRT), Forestry and Wood Technology (FWT), Pharmacy and Soil Science. The graduates find their ways into different career streams depending upon their academic background and merits. The school houses quite a good number of laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipments, WiFi hotspots, laboratory-cum-classrooms, virtual classrooms, E-learning centre, seminar library and conference rooms for improving employability skills of the graduates. Graduates are employed at different reputed world class universities and research organizations including NASA, Washington State University, USA, Missouri University, USA, North Carolina Central University, USA, Stanford University, USA, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, University of Western Australia, Australia, Lakehead University, Canada, University of Eastern Finland, Finland, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) etc. Graduates are also engaged in different entrepreneurship related to wood and furniture industries, aquaculture business and consultancy, aquaculture firms and hatcheries, scientific instruments, apparatus, chemicals and reagents supply, small manufacturing units for 3D printing of drug, agricultural farms. A huge number of graduates work in emerging pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sectors. Some graduates also find their ways into different non-governmental organizations (NGO) while others get themselves engaged into different government and banking sector.  Modern and interdisciplinary curricula of different disciplines help graduates to find out higher study and research opportunities in different universities in Asia, Europe, Australia and North America.

 

Management and Business Administration (MBA) School

The MBA School offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes under the Business Administration (BA) discipline. Majority of the graduates are working for Multi national/ International Financial Institutions including Standard Chartered Bank,. HSBC,  Commercial Bank of Ceylon Bangladesh, Bank Al Falah Bangladesh, Woori Bank Bangladesh, MetLife Bangladesh; International Donor Organizations include  World Bank, and  USAID; International Media organizations include  Google country office at Singapore and  BBC Media Group at Bangladesh, Multi-national Telecom Companies include  Grameen Phone Bangladesh (a Telenor Company),  Telenor Myanmar,  Robi Bangladesh (an Axiata company), Airtel Bangladesh,  Banglalink (a Vimpelcom company) and  Vimpelcom Netherlands ; Multi-national FMCG Companies such as  British American Tobacco at Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Singapore, Unilever Bangladesh,  Nestle Bangladesh, ReckitBenkizer at Bangladesh and Thailand,. DHL Bangladesh, Marico Bangladesh, Proctor & Gamble Bangladesh, Coca Cola Far East Bangladesh, Bata Bangladesh. In addition the graduates are also working for Multi-national Trading Companies, Multinational Oil & Gas Companies, Multinational Pharmaceutical companies, Multinational Garments Manufacturing Companies, Multinational Market Research companies, Multinational Shipping Lines Companies. There is one new discipline namely Human Resource Management (HRM) under the school awaiting to produce their graduate soon and expected to enrich the outcome in more diversified form.

 

Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) School

The SET School offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. International reputation of the school attracts students from the neighbouring countries to study and research on innovative programmes. The SET School is home to several advanced research facilities including the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory, Remote Sensing Laboratory, Communications Systems Simulation Laboratory, Building Science Laboratory, Programming and Software Engineering Laboratory, Physics, Electromagnetics and Advance Electronics Laboratory, Chemical Systems Laboratory and other related laboratories. The interdisciplinary nature of much of our work helps us to constantly explore new opportunities to cross boundaries. The five-year undergraduate programme of the Architecture Discipline and the four- year undergraduate programme of the  Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE), Mathematics, Urban and Rural Planning (URP) disciplines provide the graduates a thorough understanding and knowledge of their subjects. There are another three new disciplines namely Chemistry, Physics and Statistics are waiting to produce their first batch soon. The students graduated from the School are working with reputation in the universities as well as in the industries of almost all the countries of the world. It is remarkable that around 45 graduate of the CSE Discipline under this school is working for Microsoft and Google as researcher or engineer, 10 in Intel, AMD, and 105 in Fujitsu, IBM, Face book.

 

Social Science (SS) School

Social Science school includes Economics and Sociology Discipline. After being graduated, students of the school have been able to compete in the job market and prove themselves as an unbeaten candidate. They have been serving in various renowned national and international organizations. Many of them have been occupied in different public and private universities and in renowned research organizations in Bangladesh. A significant fraction of them are serving in different banks including Central Bank of Bangladesh and other financial organizations. Over five hundreds graduates of this school have joined the workforce so far and acting as the ambassador of the Discipline to project it positively both nationally and internationally.There are two new disciplines namely Development Studies  (DS) and Mass Communication & Journalism (MCJ) under the school awaiting to produce their graduate soon and expected to enrich the outcome in more diversified form.

Fine Arts Institute

There is one new institution “Fine Arts Institute” just produced its graduate from three disciplines including Drawing and Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture.

With the above-mentioned infrastructure and activities, Khulna University is marching towards its goal of achieving its position as a world rank university producing informed, capable and quality citizens of Bangladesh.
